About Reflexology Massage

What is Reflexology Massage?

Reflexology is a gentle form of therapeutic treatment applied to the feet and sometimes to the hands. It evolved around 1913 from the work of Dr. William H. Fitzgerald, an ear, nose and throat surgeon in the United States. Reflexology is considered to be a holistic healing technique that aims to treat the individual as a whole, in order to induce a state of balance and harmony in body, mind and spirit.

Reflexology is based on the belief that there are reflex areas on the feet (and hands) corresponding to all the parts of the body including major organs. It is believed that applying pressure to specific areas on the feet, hands and ears can affect internal organs and body systems, and therefore promote good health.

The therapist stimulates and works these organs and systems through the reflexes areas on the hands and feet, applying pressure to the feet with thumb and fingers. Pressure is applied to clear out congestion and restore normal functioning and health.

Reflexology was brought to America in the early 1900's by Chinese immigrants.

At some point in our lives every one suffers from minor injuries, pain or discomfort. Our instinctive reaction is to rub or hold the affected area to ease the pain. If you stub your toe or have a stomach ache, you rub it to stop it from hurting so much. Early man probably soon learnt that, whilst rubbing painful areas of his body, certain plants could be applied which would help to ease the pain and promote healing. This basic technique has been developed through the millennia into the system of massage we know today. Massage is the systematic manipulation of the soft body tissues for therapeutic purposes. The English word massage is derived from the Arabic word ‘mass’h’, which means to press gently. This itself gives a hint to the long history of massage. Massage in its most basic form has been around as long as man, however today there are many highly specialized forms of massage all derived from these basic techniques.

About Thai Massage

What is Thai Massage?

Thai Massage, Thai Yoga Massage, Nuad Boran, Nuad Paan Bulan, and Nuat Thai, are all names for a traditional healing modality which has been practiced in Thailand for centuries. Based on Ayurvedic medicine and yoga, this art form has been handed down through an unbroken chain of masters for centuries, and is practiced today across Thailand. Thai massage is becoming increasingly popular in the West, and is among the fastest growing massage modalities in the U.S. Massage Magazine, Yoga Journal, and other industry leading consumer and professional magazines have frequently featured Thai Massage in their pages.

A complete Thai massage incorporates a traditional combination of acupressure, energy meridian work, and yoga-like stretching. About Swedish Massage

What is Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It was thought to be developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812. It uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation.

Swedish massage employs five different movements:

• long, gliding strokes

• kneading of individual muscles

• friction

• hacking or tapping

• vibration

The therapist generally uses massage oil to facilitate making long, smooth strokes over the body. Swedish massage is done with the person covered by a sheet, a technique called "draping". One part of the body uncovered, massaged, and then covered up before moving on to another part of the body.

Swedish massage is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports, deep tissue and aromatherapy

What is Shiatsu or Acupressure Massage?

Shiatsu is an old, traditional Japanese healing method.

Shiatsu is an old, traditional, Japanese healing method. Shiatsu means “finger pressure.” But unlike the massages of the West, where kneading and friction is used, in shiatsu pressure and stretching is the key. The shiatsu practitioner uses palms, fingers, thumbs, knuckles, elbows, knees and the feet, to work on the body’s accupucture points, along what they consider the body’s meridians or energy channels. Its a form of “touch communication,” and is a safe and effective preventive medicine. It helps to balance a persons energy flow, and strengthen the vital organs.

In shiatsu, it is believed that disease is the result of blocked or unbalanced energy, so that it’s aither depleted or over-active. Shiatsu shares the same view as Chinese acupuncture. There are two energy forces, the Yin, or negative, and the Yang, or positive.
